Why not use Mastodon or Lemmy? How is it different?
Platforms like Mastodon or Lemmy are decentralized alternatives to mainstream social networks. While they successfully solve the problem of addictive algorithms, they do very little to combat fake accounts and troll farms. SLOVO addresses this by implementing a strict centralized verification process that guarantees every verified account belongs to exactly one real person. Platforms like Mastodon are not inherently bad; they simply prioritize absolute anonymity, which by design results in lower accountability when it comes to user profiles.
Why not just a Discord server?
A Discord server is actually a quite close approximation of what SLOVO looks like in its simplest form—a minimalistic discussion space. However, the interface is completely different, and there are key structural reasons why we chose to build our own platform instead of using a Discord server.
We believe deeply in the idea of a truly European digital social network—designed, created, and hosted in Europe, for Europeans.
Relying on a Discord server feels too much like renting a home where the landlord is a big foreign corporation.
What is the verification system all about?
Completing our in-person verification process unlocks full platform access and entry into the verified communities.
You do not have to get verified to enjoy the platform. Unverified users can still access our public tier to experience an algorithm-free feed and zero advertisements.
If you do get verified however (meaning you are willing to meet with us in person and prove you are a real human) you get access to the full social network including parts dedicated only to verified humans.
Think of it as an exclusive access to a VIP club, a trusted digital environment where everybody is a real actual human. No bots, duplicate profiles, or troll farms.
Are users anonymous or do they use their real names?
Users are entirely free to choose their own display names.
You are also free to remain unverified if you prefer.
We, however, encourage everyone to complete the verification as it is one of the biggest benefits of using SLOVO.
Verified users can still remain anonymous and do not have to use their real name.
Who is behind this?
We are a non-profit organization from Czechia aided by a group of volunteers from all across Europe.
More to be announced soon.
Who is paying for all of it?
As of now, SLOVO is financed solely through voluntary contributions. In the future, we plan to sustain the platform through donations, government grants, crowdfunding campaigns, specialized paid membership tiers and several other options.
